MoviesThis week, iTunes released Safe House, an action thriller movie starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. Not only do they star as unlikely partners, they re also unlikely costars. It s what makes the casting perfect. We re used to seeing Denzel in these types of films. Glory, Remember the Titans, and Training Day are quintessential Denzel Washington. These types of roles aren t the norm for Ryan Reynolds, who comes at his career with a much more eclectic angle, covering films from romantic comedies to superhero films, such as The Proposal and Green Lantern. Here s a look at not only Safe House, but the other recent films starring Denzel Washington or Ryan Reynolds, all of which are available for purchase and/or rent on iTunes.

SAFE HOUSE

Denzel Washington usually plays a good guy, but occasionally goes against that type, such as his turn in Training Day. With his attractive appearance, Ryan Reynolds almost always plays the good guy. They keep to these roles in Safe House.

Washington plays ex – CIA agent Tobin Frost. He s turned away from the agency and becomes an international criminal. With mercenaries against him, he s taken to a safe house in Cape Town, South Africa. This makes Matt Weston s (Reynolds) job much more interesting. He s a CIA agent in charge of watching the empty safe house in Cape Town. He watches as Frost is grilled and tortured, and when the mercenaries catch up to him, Frost and Weston go on the run together to learn not only about the mercenaries who are pursuing Frost, but about the CIA and their part in everything as well.

Despite Safe House not being a largely recognized film for either Washington or Reynolds, it initially did well at the box office. It was Washington s second largest opener, and Reynolds  third largest. It also held the number one spot at the box office and was the second film in 2012 to cross the $100 million mark. Interestingly, it s being released on iTunes before Reynolds  other two films from 2011.

BURIED

An even lesser known film starring Reynolds is Buried. Similar to Tom Hanks  film Cast Away, with a plotline involving a man in need of being rescued, they also both center around their singular stars and have few costars.

He eventually remembers being attacked along with other truck drivers, who had the misfortune of being killed. He finds the cell phone and either reaches people who are not home or gets cut off, and has just a limited amount of time to figure out how to either escape or be rescued.

Buried appeared at the Sundance Film Festival, then enjoyed a theatrical release after Lionsgate purchased the film. It went on to win the Feature Film of the Year Award at the European Fantastic Film Festival, and won multiple Goya and Gaudi Awards.

 MoviesTHE PROPOSAL

From a little known Ryan Reynolds  film to one of his most well-known, The Proposal. This film did very well at the box office, thanks in large part to the chemistry between Reynolds and co-star Sandra Bullock. It was the highest – grossing romantic comedy of 2009.

Bullock stars as Margaret, an executive editor at a book publisher who is disliked by the people who work for her. Finding out her expired visa is going to get her deported back to Canada, Margaret first lies and says she is engaged to marry her assistant Andrew (Reynolds), and caught in the lie, is forced to make plans to marry him in order to stay in the USA. The unlikely couple travel back to his hometown in Alaska to spring the news on his folks who are more than ready to welcome a daughter-in-law to the family. They stage a quick ceremony to take place there in Sitka, Alaska. Predictably, Margaret starts to soften around Andrew s very warm and welcoming family.

Although the film is set mostly in Sitka, Alaska, filming actually took place different areas of Massachusetts. Some areas of Rockport were remodeled to look like Alaska, and Manchester – by – the – Sea, the Cape Ann area, and Boston were used as well.

THE BOOK OF ELI

Despite his massive star appeal, Denzel Washington has had his share of movies that have flown under the radar. One of those lesser known films is The Book of Eli along with Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis and

Jennifer Beals in a story with a powerful theological tone.

In a post – Apocalyptic world, Eli travels alone across the U.S. He is highly skilled as a fighter, but seemingly only out of a sense of survival. Looking for water, he reaches a rundown town overseen by a tyrant, Carnegie.

A blind concubine of Carnegie s offers Eli the water he s looking for, and Carnegie then asks her daughter to seduce Eli. In the process, she discovers a book he has in his possession when he asks her to pray with him. Carnegie overhears them praying and realizes the book Eli has might be the one he has been searching for. Carnegie orders his henchmen to shoot an escaping Eli, but the bullets simply graze him, making it appear as if he is somehow being protected.

The film had the misfortune of being released at the same time as Avatar, limiting its box office success. It fared better in the home video market with sales of a three to one margin over its nearest competitor.

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123

Washington starred alongside John Travolta in The Taking of Pelham 123, a remake of the 1974 classic that starred Walter and RobertShaw. It was also made into a 1988 TV movie starring Edward James Olmos and Vincent D Onofrio. The script was updated with modern technology and to make use of post – 9/11 New York City.

The story is based on a novel by Morton Freedgood, writing under the pseudonym of John Godey. A man going by the name "Ryder" (Travolta) and three others take over a New York City subway train and, by separating the front car from the rest, take the passengers hostage.

A train dispatcher named Garber (Washington), receives a call from Ryder, who is demanding a $10 million ransom within an hour, and the two develop a rapport. The NYPD Emergency Service Unit takes over and relieves Garber, angering and upsetting Ryder. He then kills the train s motorman in response, forcing the authorities to bring Garber back to finish the negotiations.

The film sat in the number three spot at the box office behind The Hangover and Up. It was possibly held up in part due to Travolta s decision to not promote the film. His son had died earlier in the year and he didn t feel ready to re-enter the limelight.
