It's one of the most iconic films of the eighties so it was almost an inevitability when talk started on a possible sequel for the Tom Cruise-starring testosterone-fuelled Top Gun. Previous rumours have suggested that Cruise, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are all set to return for another outing, and now it seems Val Kilmer has put himself forward for some cockpit action.
Starring as Tom 'Iceman' Kazanski, Kilmer brought to the film a man who faced off against Cruise's Maverick and got that competitive edge to the film going. Clearly a film he holds in high regard, Kilmer revealed his thoughts on Top Gun 2 to MTV whilst promoting his latest film, The Fourth Dimension.
Sure, it would be fun. I'd have to get a haircut, but anything for the role!
Additionally, he spoke of his respect for those involved in the original project who could be set for the return.
It's not like Jerry Bruckheimer isn't the most successful producer on Earth, I was going around bragging. I did a little part just to hang out with [director Tony Scott] and Denzel Washington, on this movie 'Deja Vu'. I'm going around saying, 'Jerry's probably made $5 billion dollars,' I was guessing. And one interviewer said, 'You haven't read the [press notes]?' He just turned the page and there's Jerry's bio: $50 billion dollars, he's grossed. As soon as I read that, wow. He's got thirty or forty or fifty awesome secrets about how to make a big blockbuster.
Very positive vibrations from the Kilmer camp and we wouldn't mind admitting that Iceman would be an extremely welcome addition to the sequel. If it starts to come together with Cruise, Kilmer, Scott and Bruckheimer all on board then all we need is a catchy tune like 'Highway To The Dangerzone' and Top Gun 2 could be set to rekindle that classic flame of Top Gun love.
