Last night we learned Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will begin working on a new animated Spider-Man movie for Sony (aren't they all essentially animated?) with a planned July 2018 release date, but that film is separate from the new adventures of Spider-Man as the studio is set to reboot the webslinger for the second time and a list of five contenders has arrived courtesy of The Wrap.
Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars), Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender's Game), Tom Holland ("Wolf Hall," The Impossible), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Liam James (The Way, Way Back, "The Killing") are reportedly in the running to star as Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) as the character needs to be cast soon as he's expected to cameo in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, though word is that role won't be filmed until June of next year.
"The Wrap" does say others are in contention, but those five names are the ones they focus on saying "test offers" are expected soon with a final decision expected to be made in the next 2-3 weeks.
Drew Goddard is still attached as the film's director with a July 18, 2017 release date set.
