Award season is here Nominees and snubs The Schoolcraft ...

The new year brings about a new season: award season. It’s time for people in the movie and television industries to get recognized for their work. The Oscars are the gold medals with the Golden Globes being the very important silver medals. People’s Choice Awards, Annual Critic’s Choice Awards and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards closely follow and are prestigious in their own right.

The Golden Globes were awarded last Sunday, hosted by the hilarious duo Tina Fey and Amy Pohler. The big TV show winners were “Girls” on HBO and “Homeland” on Showtime. Don Cheadle won Best Actor in a Comedy TV Series for “House of Lies.” Lena Dunham of “Girls” won Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Claire Danes and Damien Lewis won Best Actress and Actor for the TV show drama “Homeland.” Best TV Show Drama went to “Homeland” and Best TV Show Comedy went to “Girls.”

A surprise guest was former president Bill Clinton who introduced the film “Lincoln.” Also, Jodie Foster publicly “came out” in a very moving speech and received a standing ovation after she received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. She also hinted at retirement and touched on the privacy she awards herself as she has been acting for 47 years.

Actor in Motion Picture, Drama went to Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln,” while Actor in Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical went to Hugh Jackman for “Les Misérables.” Actress in Motion Picture, Drama went to Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty.” Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical went to Jennifer Lawrence for “Silver Linings Playbook.” Finally, Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture went to Christoph Waltz for “Django Unchained.”

Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical went to “Les Misérables.” The biggest surprise to many was the award for Motion Picture, Drama which went to “Argo.” Ben Affleck also won the Best Director Globe for “Argo” and yet he was completely snubbed from the Oscars, not securing even a Best Director nomination.

The Golden Globes often foreshadow the results for the Oscars but this year’s results have left critics even more confused. Actors, actresses and directors begin campaigning for their movies months in advance. Critics announce who will most likely be nominated for Oscars and then we patiently wait until the second week of January when the press surround the host of that year’s Academy Awards and we find out who was nominated, who was snubbed and who came out of left field. 2013 is the year of the new generation as many of the nominees are first timers.

“Lincoln” is the predicted winner for Best Picture while “Beasts of Southern Wild” is the big surprise nominee to many. Best Actor is predicted to go to Daniel Day Lewis, an Oscar veteran, for his stunning portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. If he wins he would be the first man to win three Oscars for Best Actor, and the same can be said of Denzel Washington who also has two gold statues to his name for Best Actor.

While majority of critics are in agreement as to Best Actor, it seems to be a toss-up for Best Actress. Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and some even say Emmanuelle Riva all stand a chance of bringing home a gold statuette.

2013 Academy Award Nominees:

Best Picture: “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Lincoln,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Amour,” “Django Unchained” and “Argo.”
