Cincinnati Human Relations Commission is hosting their 5th annual Fantastic Youth Debate that will be on Saturday November 10th from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall. This years theme is The state of our economy in Ohio. Each team will debate on issues that are related to topics such as education, healthcare and employment. The winning teams (1st – 3rd place) will receive a cash prize and each student who participates will receive a trophy.
The Fantastic Youth Debate is inspired by the movie The Fantastic Debaters starring Denzel Washington. This movie is based on a right tale of a headstrong debate coach who formed the students of a small East Texas college into a debate team that gave even Harvard’s intelligent minds a run for their money.
Jaime Bryant, CHRCs Youth Services Coordinator comments, The Fantastic Youth Debate is an brilliant platform for high school students to learn positive youth development skills. This plot of execution includes research, team-building skills, and debate skills in the format of competitive team debates using a project-based learning approach.
This years judges will include, Councilman Cecil Thomas, Board Member, Donny Young (The GreenDay Group); James Cullen (Director of ETS at Cincinnati Youth Collaborative), Amanda Gray (African American Chamber of Commerce) and Judge Fanon Rucker (Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge). The moderator is Michael Griffin (President/ CEO of DVS Services).
The schools and organizations participating this year include, Archbishop Moeller High School, Cincinnati Job Corps Academy, Exclusive Services, LLC, Summit Country Day School, Walnut Hills High School, Withrow High School and Woodward Career Technical High School
