Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Regiment - Jobs

Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial sits in front of the State House on Beacon St. in Boston. Robert Gould Shaw commanded the 54th Regiment – perhaps the Union’s first free all black regiment. Although he was initially unenthusiastic about his assignment, the dedication of his men deeply impressed him, and he grew to respect them as fine soldiers. On learning that black soldiers would receive less pay than white ones, he inspired his unit to conduct a boycott until this inequality was rectified. Video produced and copyright 2009 for democraticvistas.primarysource.org to help teachers introduce American art to students. Gifford Video Productions is located in Newton / Boston Massachusetts.
