Slow box office weekend to wrap up October, but as we move into November, expect numbers to leap way up, especially with what we have coming our way. But until then…
1. Argo – $12.1 ($60.5 total)
Ben Affleck is now conquering box offices. In its third week of release, it finally took the top spot with $12 million. It has been one of the best reviewed films of the year and looks to stick around for awhile. It’ll drop a little as the big pictures come out in the next couple weeks (Skyfall, Twilight) but it’ll stay on pace with The Town which finished with $92 million when all was said and done.
2. Cloud Atlas – $9.6 (first week)
The Wachowskis’ new film flopped in its first weekend, despite being referred to as “sprawling” and “epic” and “ambitious.” It was always going to be a tough sell, as its a time-jumping, universe-expanding film that clocks in a bit under three hours. But it couldn’t find a big audience and with a rumored budget around the century mark, things don’t look so hot for Andy and Lana, who haven’t struck gold since The Matrix trilogy.
3. Hotel Transylvania – $9.4 ($130.4 total)
The animated Halloween-ish film hangs around in the top 5, taking its total closer to the $150 million mark. Throw in $91 million from the international box office and the film has far exceeded expectations and god knows when it comes to animated films, this normally means we’ll be seeing a sequel in 3-4 years.
4. Paranormal Activity 4 – $8.5 ($42.5 total)
The fourth entry in the series continues the downward spiral since the record-breaking first film came out in 2009. Even though it’s underperforming, it’s still a huge win for Paramount, as the budget is a mere $5 million and it’s been an equalized in the international box office, taking its total near the $100 million mark.
5. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D – $8.0 (first week)
The horror sequel that not too many asked for failed to bring in the audience that the first film did, opening to less than half of the original’s $20 million first weekend. A small $20 million budget means that it will likely get back what was put into it, but it’s highly unlikely we will see a third entry in the video game-turned-film series. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check out my photo essay from the Red Carpet Premiere! Give it a look!
6. Taken 2 – $7.7 ($117.1 total)
Liam just keeps on raking in the money. Still not likely to hit the first film’s take ($145 million) but a victory for Fox nonetheless.
7. Here Comes the Boom – $5.2 ($30.3 total)
Hanging in the top 10 for a bit longer. I give it another week, maybe two, before it’ll boom it’s way out and on its way to Redboxes everywhere.
8.Alex Cross -$5.1 ($19.5 total)
No dress, no success. (That’s mine – you can’t have it!)
9. Sinister – $5.0 ($39.4 total)
Very small budget and a creepy premise makes a great Halloween sleeper.
10. Fun Size – $4.1 (first week)
I have no comments for this piece of garbage, other than the fact that it’s a shame that $14 million was used to create it…

Next week sees the release of one of my most-anticipated films of the last few months, the animated Wreck-It Ralph, as well as the looks-better-every-day Denzel Washington flick Flight, and the awesome-looking The Man with the Iron Fists, directed by and starring RZA and featuring hamming-it-up performances by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu.
