The Captain America sequel has its director…or shall I say directors. Joe and Anthony Russo have officially signed on to direct the still unnamed sequel that is due out in theaters on April 4, 2014.
This seems like an interesting choice as the Russo Brothers have really only directed two films (You, Me and Dupree and Welcome to Collinwood) and the majority of their experience has been in television. However, their pedigree in the TV world is pretty solid as they directed the Arrested Development pilot, which is one of the most brilliant episodes of television comedy to date. They also directed the pilot of Community and served as Executive Producers on the series, in addition to many other episodic half hours. So, pretty much we know they can do TV comedy and they can do it extremely well, but I wonder how this translates to a big budget superhero film?
It is true that one of the best parts of Captain America and all of the Marvel franchises is the way they are able to integrate humor and heavy actions sequences. As we know they can do the humor, we really just need to hope that they are able to pull off the action. However, given that Marvel has yet to make many missteps (besides Iron Man 2) there has to be some reason they believe they can do this and I have faith.
The next film in the franchise will pick up with Steve Rogers' story where The Avengers left off. He will continue to embrace his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and try to figure out how to live in the modern world.
