Ever wonder why people twiddle their thumbs when they're bored?

Answer: they desperately want to play thumb war, but they have no one to fight but themselves.

Usually people get bored when they are alone. But the lack of companionship didn't stop movie characters from being active. Generally, I wouldn't support advice-by-blockbuster, but you can scathe off boredom by looking to the movies for suggestions. Also, if you have a computer nearby, there are a plethora of things you can do to occupy your time. But let's focus on some useful suggestions from the movies.

1) Look for a new job: In "Fun with Dick and Jane," even Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) had to look for alternate employment. Although, I wouldn't advocate a life of crime as your first option. However, if your job is the problem, you may need to move on. Just remember, lots of people are moving onto their parents' couches, so you might not be as bad off as you think.

2)Plan your dream vacation: Vaycay planning takes time, so why not motivate yourself by planning ahead? I sometimes think about going back to South Korea and automatically start to feel less worried. I think about all the things I would do when I get there. Just imagining being somewhere beautiful and relaxing can make you feel better and less bored. And while you're imagining, why not put yourself in the plot of "The Tourist." You're sure to be too occupied with international intrigue and death-defying canopy leaps and boat rides to be bored (not to mention your co-star Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie/ Venice, Italy).

3)Organize or prioritize your life: You might as well plan something to look forward to. And you may just discover that you have something you should be doing. Think about what you want out of life and your purpose. It's important to think beyond the material, otherwise you'll end up like Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) in "Paycheck," doing anything for money. Next thing you know, you've created a machine that reads the future and promises world destruction. We don't want that, do we?

On a lighter note, "Ocean's Eleven" had their stuff together. They had a well-defined goal, and they were organized. Vegas casino heist improbability notwithstanding, you could take some time to organize your room or workspace. But you may not want to reduce the clutter too much, because Albert Einstein's workspace was notoriously messy (see here)! But I bet he knew exactly where everything was. Just try not to attract roaches with your fast food leftovers.

4)Play a de-stressing game: In the movie, "Safe House" (with Denzel Washington), when Ryan Reynolds is bored at his job, he bounces a rubber ball against the wall and plays catch with himself. Have you ever done that before? It's insanely entertaining for the simple task that it is! And if you can't catch, it's even more fun (not to mention the exercise you get, with all the chasing behind the runaway ball). Or if you have a partner in boredom, you can also play the high school favorite, paper football.

Play a brain-stimulating game: Yes, games have more than one purpose and they are very useful. Do you remember the Nintendo DS game, Brain Age? Brain Age is geared specifically toward deep-massaging your mental ability into peak condition. If you don't have access to that game, try sudoku (or the geniuses can do cryptanalysis). There are plenty of truck stop booklets full of puzzles and word-finds that you can utilize, even when you're not on the road. You might find that you're as gifted as the autistic kid in the Bruce Willis movie, "Mercury Rising."

5) Go for a walk: You already know how great walking is for your health. At the beginning of "Walking Tall," The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) does a lot of walking. I mean, he's just walking through town for the first 2 minutes of the film. Maybe that's how he got his rock-hard body… or it could be from his wrestling career. It's a toss up.

Extra: If you're bored in class, try to get ahead in your studies. Otherwise, pay attention. Or prop your head up, looking down and covering your eyes, and take a nap. As long as your elbow doesn't slip, you should be able to get a little rest in.

I hope you find these few suggestions useful. However, if you are truly immune to doing something useful with your time, you can go back to Youtube surfing or you can FOLLOW THIS LINK.

Until next time,

…Meh.
