I've never heard of Sidney Poitier's 1974 movie "Uptown Saturday Night", but apparently Adam McKay has. The director of "Anchorman" and "Step Brothers" (and for a tiny, tiny moment there, an adaptation of the Garth Ennis' ultra violent comic book movie "The Boys") is currently in negotiations to remake the film for Warner Bros., with none other than Will Smith and Denzel Washington being eyed for the film's two main leads.
The original starred Bill Cosby and Poitier as pals "who visit an illegal nightclub, and are forced to hand over their wallets to thieves. Turns out one of them contains a winning lottery ticket, emboldening the duo to bump up against the criminal element to get back the wallet."
If everything goes as Warner Bros. hopes, this would mark the first time Smith and Washington has worked together on a movie. Hard to believe, but these guys have never even come close to occupying the same screen together in all their years in Hollywood. Go figure.
The original also starred Harry Belafonte, Flip Wilson, Calvin Lockhart, Richard Pryor, Roscoe Lee Browne, and Rosalind Cash.
McKay, meanwhile, already has "Anchorman 2″ with Will Ferrell in the pipeline, so whatever happens, he'll have to do that first before heading uptown with Smith and Washington.
