With the recent announcement of Anchorman 2 set to film next year, the internet began buzzing at the thought of another Will Ferrell / Adam McKay film. Well, it now seems that McKay already has his next movie lined up after that and, while it may not receive the same built-in excitement of the Anchorman sequel, some attention should be warranted if everything comes together. The director is currently in talks to helm a remake of Uptown Saturday Night, the 1974 comedy starring Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier among others. The idea of a remake may not stir much interest in and of itself, but the fact that Will Smith and Denzel Washington are being eyed to star could change matters. Smith's Overbrook Entertainment has been developing the project, so the film could get half its starring duo fairly easily.
The original film followed a couple of friends who are forced to turn over their wallets to thieves, only to find out later that one of them contained a winning lottery ticket. The rest of the movie detailed their efforts to regain the lottery ticket as they're forced to stand up to the criminals who wronged them. With a power team-up of Smith and Washington, there's no doubt that the remake would generate plenty of interest. I'd be interested to see how they play off each other, especially since both are known for portraying swaggering alpha-males. Could there be too much bravado for one set to handle? What do you think of McKay branching out from his usual Will Ferrell work for this?
