With a potential Oscar win on the horizon, Denzel Washington is under fire for his racially laced comment during an interview with The Guardian.
During the one-one-one chat, the UK publication talked about his role in his latest film, Flight and pointed out that he’s never seen out and about with any other celebrities in the entertainment industry. When asked why his actual friends are non-celebrities and everyday people, Denzel remarked:
Because I don’t make friends! Maybe I’m not a butt-kisser, maybe I’m not a schmoozer. I’m not about to go to a party to try to get a job. And then when you have children, the other friends become other parents. We’d coach baseball or basketball. My wife and I were raised right. I don’t want movie-star friends. And being African American, there were no big movie stars to hang out with anyway, not when I was starting out, they were just the third guy from the back! For whatever reason, I never befriended any white actors.”
According to Denzel’s representative, The Guardian failed to include that Washington went on to mention that his long-time friends Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts were an exception.
Speaking of actors, Washington has been nominated for “Best Actor” Oscar for his role as Captain William “Whip” Whitaker in the film, Flight. The last time he won this award was in 2002 for his gangster cop role in the box office hit, Training Day.
The 85th Academy Awards airs LIVE tonight at 8:30pm EST on ABC.
